Reading the “Value based leadership paradigm” by Badri shatalebia and Mohammad Hossien Yarmohammadian had me reflecting on the decision-making model my team has been developing for the Yellow Company. We designed the ALIGN Model which is a framework intended to be cyclical in nature. The conclusions shared in this source reinforce the reason behind the cyclicality of our framework, stating “the approaches and traditional paradigms of management and leadership are changing increasingly, regarding to the changes and reforms” (Shatalebi & Yarmohammadian, 2011, p. 5). This source reinforced the significance of leadership being centered around values while acknowledging that values and cultures are going to evolve over time.

I also appreciate how this source discusses the significance of leadership being proactive rather than reactive. Values-based leadership requires a level of oversight that is respectful of the environment and provides more guidance and oversight than direct involvement. This is something I had the opportunity to put into practice as Program Director with the National Student Leadership Conference last summer. I oversaw a group of team advisors who worked with groups of pre-college students, and there was a level of trust that had to be established and maintained throughout our programming. I would provide training and lead daily logistics meetings, but beyond that, I stayed available as a resource for them rather than taking part in or taking over any of their responsibilities. This experience ties into the messages of this paper on allowing situations in leadership to be approached with more forethought and respect to the team you work with.
