In the article, “Strong Ethics Provide Guidance,” it explains how ethics can be a sounding board during times when people become divided. If people feel unheard or fearful in the workplace, strong ethical leaders can bring the team back together. Ethical leaders can be a source of support and guidance for team members.
I thought it was interesting how the article compared ethical leadership to a lighthouse. If values such as respect, integrity and responsibility remain steadfast, then the leaders who uphold these values are a safe space for their team members. Anyone can be an ethical leader, not just those with a formal title. Everyone has the responsibility to speak up and hold other accountable. Keeping actions in line with shared values is very important.
This article describes ethics as essential in the workplace, not just as a nicety. In order to have a healthy and productive workplace culture, ethical principles need to be enforced and shared. In order to have strong character as a leader and ultimately as a person, you need to adhere to ethical principles. Trustworthiness and transparency also important traits to have, especially as a leader in society.
Organizations need to prioritize ethical leadership. This likely does not happen as often as it should. Goals and financial gain are often prioritized over ethics. A company, although it may have lofty goals, cannot function well if it does not have ethical leadership. If employees do not feel safe and comfortable they cannot adequately reach their goals.
