Reading a Primary Source Document: Questions to Ask

When was it written?

Who wrote it (and under what circumstances)?

Who was the audience?

What voices do we hear?  What voices are absent?

Your analysis should include all of the above elements.  Here are some other elements you might include, but you don’t have to include all of them. Focus on what you find to be most important.

Why did they write it?  What was their purpose?

What does the source take for granted?  What does it not take for granted?

What language is used?  What allusions are made?

Do we see evidence of social groups?  (specific workers, owners, consumers…..)

Do we see evidence of paradigms?  (basic models of business, of society ….)

Do we see other course themes?
