Capitalism in North Carolina in the late 19th and early 20th Century

In this lab you will be asked to look at some aspect of capitalism in North Carolina in the late 19th and early 20th century.  To do this we will use newspapers, city directories and other primary sources.   The goal of this lab will be to develop your ability to critically read primary sources (sources written at the time of the event they describe) and to compare them with either with one another or sources written by historians.  Pick one of the following topics:

Cotton Mills in the South

Food Shopping in Greensboro, North Carolina

Write a 750-1000 word analysis of what you found and how it relates to what we have discussed in class.  Quote from the sources to support your argument.  Submit as a Google Doc on Moodle Due Feb 22
Note:  Because we are discussing this in class on the 5th, unless you are ill or have an emergency, late labs will be penalized one letter grade per day late.
